Experience a private guided tour of Rwanda including Akagera National Park and a gorilla trekking. This is a superb opportunity to experience Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and the last refuge for savannah-adapted species in Rwanda. Akagera’s wildlife includes zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions and hundreds of bird species. Virunga Lodge is set on a stunning hillside, and boasts panoramic vistas of the Virunga Volcanoes and the beautiful lakes.
Day 1 Arrival in Kigali
Arrive airport and meet our representative, you will be transferred to The Retreat.
Balance of the day at leisure, meals are for your own account on this day. Depending on your flight time, we can add a guided day excursion, or book a spa treatment, or you can simply relax and enjoy the property’s facilities.
Day 2 Travel to Akagera National Park
Early wake up call and depart to the East of the country to reach Akagera National Park.
Arrive at the luxury Magashi Camp and relax before the afternoon game activity. Back at the lodge on time for dinner and night.
Everything about Magashi is a thrilling quest. Watch elephants, near camp, submerge in the lake’s silvery blue waters. Drive across miles of open savannah tracking rhinos, giraffes and lions. Try your hand at catch-and-release fishing, watched by a shy sitatunga. And listen to the stories of the land during a traditional Kugisha supper around a roaring fire with friends old and new.
Day 3-4 Game Viewing at Akagera National Park
Enjoy two full days at the lodge, including all your meals, local beverages and the scheduled game viewing activities.
Gear up for thrilling game drives during your stay. A wildlife sighting is always unpredictable and that’s what makes a game drive so exciting. Look out for tracks. Listening for alarm calls and be on the alert for nearby predators. There’s so much to see, and being the first to spot something brings a whole new level of satisfaction to your day.
Day 5 Volcanoes National Park
Early departure today to reach the mountainous region and gorilla territory.
You will arrive at the lodge late afternoon and have time to freshen up before dinner.
** This is a long day of driving through the wonderful countryside; including a lunch stop in Kigali. It is possible to organise for a helicopter transfer (weather permitting), contact us for the price of this option ***.
Day 6 Gorilla Trekking at Volcanoes National Park
This morning you will depart early to the park headquarters for a briefing. Once you are briefed on the gorilla family your group is trekking (small group per tracker), you’ll walk through the tropical rainforest in search of the mountain gorillas. You may find them doing their daily chores of feeding their young ones, climbing trees, and just relaxing. You will have about 1 hour with the gorillas, and then return to the headquarters. You’ll transfer back to the lodge in time for a late lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure to relax. It is possible to hike around the lodge or chat with your guide if you would like to book a cultural activity (not included). Your dinner and an overnight stay will be at the lodge.
Day 7 Return to Kigali
Breakfast and check out.
Your guide will transfer you back to Kigali airport, including an orientation tour of the city.
Your meals are for your own account today.
Check in for your own flight back home, alternatively chat to us to extend your trip to see the chimpanzees in Nyungwe, or cruise of Lake Kivu, or both.
